Non-Destructive Examination (NDE)

As the name suggests, non-destructive examination (or NDE for short) is used to evaluate materials/components integrity either before or after machining. Using various processes, we can check for the following:

• Welding defects
• Differences in material characteristics
• Discontinuities
• Cracks
• Porosity

We find all of this and more without causing any damage to the part itself.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Ultrasonic testing is the non-destructive testing that we use most commonly on the raw material prior to machining.  It uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate products and ensure there are no discontinuities within the volume of the raw material inspected.  

Capabilities Include:

• Extensive assortment of calibration blocks in varying materials.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT)

With the help of magnetic fields, Magnetic Particle Testing identifies discontinuities at and near the surface of products made with ferromagnetic materials. This testing process is relatively inexpensive, highly effective, and most commonly performed on finished machined parts.

Capabilities Include:

• Magnetec 3504 Wet Horizontal Unit with 54.0” head opening
• AC Yoke and 10 lb. Test Bar
• Both wet and aerosol wet fluorescents

Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LP)

This process involves exposing a part to a die penetrant fluid and developer to identify

defects exposed to the surface in both magnetic and non-magnetic materials. This process, while similar to Magnetic Particle Testing in relation to the defects found, is a slower and bit more costly based on the process.  The flexibility with LP is it does allow for checking a part in the machine if a potential defect is noticed.
